Junior Boys - It's All True

For our latest Under The Influence playlist, we asked Jeremy Greenspan of Canadian electronic pop duo Junior Boys to tell us about the songs that inspired their latest album It’s All True. Hear his picks and read his explanation for why each track was chosen below.

1. 10cc – “The Sacro-Iliac”
I listened to their album Sheet Music nonstop while making our new record. I really love how obsessive and introverted their music is. Kinda like Steely Dan, they sound like a group of guys who are completely at home in a studio, and completely lost outside of it.

2. Miguel – “Sure Thing”
Probably my favourite track of the year. This track is so warped and sinister. I heard it constantly on Buffalo Radio, and eventually it took over my brain for a few weeks.

3. Storm Queen – “Look Right Through”
Morgan Geist mixed our track “Itchy Fingers” on the new album. I constantly look to Morgan for advice and inspiration. He is a great friend, but also one of the 2 or 3 most talented producers of electronic music in the world.

4. Pal Joey – “Partytime”
Speaking of Morgan Geist. A few years ago, he really got me on to Pal Joey. a new york producer, who is behind famous tracks like “Dance” and “Hot Music.” Recently he released a compilation which includes some of his early tracks. He has a sound totally his own, this was a huge influence on me while making the new album.

5. DB-X – “Electric Shock”
There is a great history of Canadian techno and house music. and it isn’t really discussed too much. A lot of these early pioneers were super important to us when we were younger. Even though Richie Hawtin went on to become super famous, there were tons of great acts in the early 90s doing amazing stuff. Dan Bell is a total genius, he is up there with american guys like Robert Hood, Carl Craig. and Jeff Mills for doing totally funked out techno.

6. Mantler – “Lately I’m Sad”
Mantler aka Chris Cummings is a Toronto native who I (and others) believe to be the best songwriter in Canada. He is mindblowingly good … almost like a modern, canadian Harry Nillson or something.

7. SWV – “Rain”
Its not a huge secret that I have a great love for late 90s R&B. But it’s funny how recently the love has turned into a sort of nostalgia. It is amazing how quickly time passes. and how a lot of those songs from that period have stayed with me.

8. The Radio Dept. – “I Don’t Need Love, I’ve Got My Band”
I don’t listen to a lot of indie rock music. its a bit of a gap in my musical education. but this is a band that I have loved and been rooting for, for a long time. It is great to see that they are finally getting the recognition they deserve.

9. Blawan – “Bohla”
This is a guy that my old bandmate John got me onto. after years of kinda listening to pretty much exclusively American dance music (with a smattering of german stuff), it’s been great to see a bunch of young UK producers doing stuff that I actually like again. UK dance music was so important to me as a teenager, it was depressing over the past couple of years to feel so divorced from it. But it seems now like there are a lot of people doing stuff this year that is terrific.

10. Lil Wayne – “Receipt”
I always go back to Carter II. It just gets me excited. Excited about music. His new stuff is always good, but that album is the one for me.

11. John Martyn – “Couldn’t Love You More”
I don’t know, I sorta think of John Martyn as a soul singer, and not a folky. I don’t know if that is how he would have seen it. But whatever, he is one of my favourite singers ever.

12. Imagination – “Music and Lights”
Imagination were a great R&B band from the UK who were popular in the early 80s. they have this sorta signature gliding bass sound on most of their big hits. they are pretty under-appreciated. I think the singer had a talk show in the UK for a while.
